Gambling advertising controls by platform
Current status
SBS allows signed-in users to opt out of Betting / Wagering advertising through their account preferences. Made a permanent, fully integrated feature on 10 February 2026 (world-first for a streaming broadcaster).
What this means for you
SBS calls this an Opt-out program and says selecting Betting / Wagering will significantly reduce video advertisements in that category — a stronger type of gambling advertising control than simply asking to see fewer ads about the topic. Ads are reduced rather than guaranteed to disappear completely: lotteries are excluded, and sponsorship billboards, partnership announcements and sponsored segments within programs are not covered. You can only opt out of one category (Betting/Wagering, Alcohol, or Quick Service Restaurants) at a time, and the setting can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
Time required
Approximately 30 seconds
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Sign in and open your SBS account page.
Open SBS My Account - 2
Scroll down to Ad Preference.
- 3
Select Betting / Wagering (excludes Lotteries).
- 4
Confirm via the pop-up. Changes take up to 24 hours to activate.
Why this service received this rating
SBS provides a dedicated gambling advertising opt-out program and says selecting Betting / Wagering will significantly reduce video advertisements in that category. Some exclusions remain, so the control does not guarantee zero gambling advertising.
Current status
YouTube allows signed-in users to limit gambling advertisements through Google's My Ad Center sensitive topic controls.
What this means for you
Google treats Gambling as one of its dedicated Sensitive topics, and you can set it to "Limited by you". Google then attempts to limit advertising from that category, which is a stronger control than a preference to see fewer ads about a topic. It is not a full block: only signed-in activity is covered, ads on unrelated topics that mention gambling (for example a sports ad referencing odds) may still appear, and your own search activity can still surface gambling ads.
Time required
Approximately 30 seconds
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Sign in to your Google account.
Open My Ad Center - 2
Open Google My Ad Center — Customize.
- 3
Open the Sensitive tab.
- 4
Find Gambling and toggle it off (shows 'Limited by you'). Preferences save automatically.
Why this service received this rating
Google provides a dedicated sensitive-topic control for Gambling. When limited, Google attempts to restrict gambling ads and documents specific circumstances in which related ads may still appear.
