Media Centre

Australia's independent resource for gambling advertising controls on streaming services.

Why this matters

Most major streaming services currently provide no dedicated gambling advertising controls, leaving Australians with little control over the gambling advertising they are shown. Ad Control helps Australians discover the controls that are available today while tracking how platforms respond as industry practices and legislation evolve.

Tracking what has changed, and when.

Current snapshot

  • 19streaming services reviewed
  • 2services provide dedicated gambling advertising controls
  • 2services do not display advertising at all
  • 7services offer a paid ad-free plan that avoids advertising on on-demand content
  • 8services currently provide no gambling-specific controls

Key findings

  • Of the 17 streaming services reviewed that carry advertising, only 2 currently provide dedicated gambling advertising controls.
  • SBS On Demand currently provides a dedicated gambling advertising opt-out for signed-in users.
  • Google allows signed-in users to limit gambling advertising across YouTube and other Google services.
  • 7 services offer a paid ad-free plan that avoids advertising on on-demand movies and TV, but live and sport streams may still carry advertising. Paying for an ad-free plan is not the same as a gambling-specific control.
  • Stan now offers a Basic with Ads plan, so it is listed under ad-free options — choosing Standard or Premium avoids advertising on on-demand content, while Stan Sport is listed separately because advertising appears on selected live sport and no gambling ad controls are available.
  • Most major Australian streaming services currently provide no gambling-specific advertising controls.
  • New "Triple Lock" gambling advertising laws currently being debated in the Australian Parliament could require many online platforms displaying gambling advertising to introduce user controls if passed.

Why Ad Control exists

Ad Control was created after discovering that SBS On Demand quietly introduced gambling advertising controls—something many Australians are unaware exists.

After comparing other major streaming services, it became clear there was no simple, independent resource explaining which platforms provide gambling advertising controls and how to use them.

Ad Control aims to make that information easy to find while encouraging greater transparency across the streaming industry.

Assessment methodology

Streaming services are assessed using Ad Control's public Assessment Framework.

Assessments are based on:

  • Official platform documentation
  • Publicly available information
  • Direct testing where possible
  • Information submitted by streaming services

Platform submissions are welcomed, however all updates are independently reviewed before changes are made to platform listings.

"I'd wager most Australians don't even know they have the option to control the ads they see, let alone how to do it. Ad Control exists to make that information easy to find while encouraging greater transparency across the streaming industry."
